Found out about a new and free instant messaging application called Friendplay.
Friendplay is currently in Beta and is supposed to be compatible with Java enabled phones (including BlackBerry), but all my attempts to download it have failed. I figured I’d still let you all know in case you have better luck
. Since it’s in Beta it may have bugs, so only download this application if you’re comfortable with testing Betas.
Friendplay allows you to connect to your Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk and AIM accounts over data or Wi-Fi. Besides one-on-one chat sessions users can create multiple chat rooms, add friends to frequently chat friend lists, and backup your contact list!
Friendplay also has non-chat features where you can “Send free SMS”, download ringtones, wallpapers or even videos via Friendplay Mobilefun.
You can download it now by visiting im.friendplay.com from your BlackBerry Browser, or visit Friendplay.com for more info. If you’re able to download it let me know what you think in the comments!
Full press release after the jump.
Press Release
Friendplay.com has launched a new instant messaging application for Java enabled phones and iPhone with Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk and AIM messaging connectivity to give a complete integrated package for users to stay mobile and chat for free. Users can visit: http://im.friendplay.com to download a copy of our Instant Messenger for personal use or distribute to friends to strike up a conversation.
Instead of one-to-one chat session, users can create multiple chat rooms, add their friends into frequently chat friend list. Other than free chat, the application is able to backup contact list so that users can retrieve their friend list which stores the phone numbers in case they have lost their mobile phones.
The application is ultra-compatible which is only approx. 88kb, and works on over 2,000 handsets include Java (J2ME) enabled phone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile.
The cost comparison between conventional SMS method compared to chatting via Friendplay IM is huge, as studies have shown the Total Chat Cost for Friendplay IM is only 8% of the total cost spent on SMS. Other areas which Friendplay IM excels are the ability to send unlimited characters per session versus 160 characters per send out using SMS. Another plus side is that there isn’t any international or domestic rate for sending messages as compared to SMS.
Other non-chat features included in the IM would be “Send free SMS”, download ringtones, wallpapers or even videos via Friendplay Mobilefun.
Now, you do not need to invite friends manually, there is an invite friend function included and Friendplay even gives free MC$500 credits when user first join Friendplay, and for each friend the user successfully refers to Friendplay! Users can also redeem the MC$ currency into USD (US dollar). Simply select ‘Invite friends’ from the Friendplay IM menu!
