Features And Screenshots Of The Leaked BlackBerry Messenger 5.0

* UPDATE Added some features and screenshots. *

Here are some features and a few screenshots of the leaked BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.

  • Avatars for contacts and yourself as well as syncing them to your address book
  • Crop and save images for sending or using as your avatar
  • Set conversation subjects
  • Your own BBM barcode
  • Location and timezone options
  • Backup/restore contacts to your media card or device
  • Save message history on your media card or device (none, 25, 50 or 100 updates)
  • Different chat styles
    • standard
    • chat bubbles
    • stripes
  • New and more smileys
  • New options to add a contact (via PIN, barcode sharing/scanning)
  • Better “send file” options

I was able to install it on my Curve 8900 running the official OS 4.6.1.250 and haven’t had any problems yet. If you decide to try BBM 5.0 make sure you MAKE A BACKUP. A few people have been saying they lost contacts and they didn’t make a backup, so it’s important that you do so. If you want to try BBM 5.0 click here.

Overall I am very pleased with it and can’t wait to see what other new and cool things BlackBerry OS 5.0 will have.

If you notice any additional features or options feel free to share them in the comments. Check out the rest of the screenshots after the jump.

I haven't been able to try out the feature to share locations... each time i try to click view it, it opens to a blank white screen. So I reinstalled it and now instead it just says maps disabled :(

I also don't have the "show when I'm on the phone" feature either

  • piewacket
Please do you Know how we can see each others contact pic ? curve 8310 OS 4.5.0.163
  • The only way to do this right now is to add them as a contact with a picture in your address book.

I am loving the 5.0. It makes me feel like I am using a much less antiquated IM system. I can't wait to see what other updates are coming our way.
  • giorgosh
Anyone managed to 'locate' a friend?
  • MTDutcher
Bummed - Verizon hasn't upgraded our OS on the Curve (8330), so not compatible with mine. Looks awesome and I can't wait for it to become available so I can try it out!
  • That's not a problem :). Just because Verizon hasn't released it doesn't mean you can't upgrade.

You can use any released OS meant for the 8330 on yours. Here try this one: http://bit.ly/3waOZk

That's awesome. I figured that might be the case, but was so far
unsuccessful in figuring out where to go for an upgrade. Thanks for the
advice and I'll give this a whirl!

Nice screenshots, but mine dosent have the "On phone" and "What im listening to" options, but other than that loving it!
  • What's the barcode used for? I'm installing it now for my VZW 8330. Slow as heck at downloadin. If you want another OTA download spot, gimme a shout, I've got some extra bandwidth.

i have a question why is that alot of ppl that have blackberry 8300 series the bbm 5.0 dont come out or the icon doesnt appear in there phone can you write back @ mylcaryz@gmail.com
    thank you
  • Thanks for the offer.

Others can scan the barcode to add or invite you to groups instead of using the PIN, etc.

Make sure you have at least OS 4.5.0.131 installed on your 8330 before installing BBM 5.0.
  • Ouch. I installed it, rebooted, and now BB messenger is gone. v4.5.0.77 (Platform 3.2.0.51)
    Blackberry 8330 CDMA VZW.

    Ugh!

BBM5 shows up under the applications list, but no joy.
  • Yeah you need to have at least 4.5.0.131 installed for bbm 5.0 to work.
