BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 Officially Released!

RIM  has finally released BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.33 in the BlackBerry App World!!!

  • Enhanced SMS
    • Allows for a conversational chat-like user experience with a single contact list for the most personal mobile-to-mobile communications
    • Note: BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0 and later is required for the SMS functionality.
  • Avatars
    • Users can choose a picture from the BlackBerry smartphone gallery and save it as their personal avatar, which will be seen by their contacts. They can also view other avatars in the contact list and zoom in on the avatars of contacts participating in a conversation by selecting “View participants.”
  • Large Media File Transfer
    • Users can send/receive large file transfers up to 6 megabytes for pictures, files and audio.
    • Note: BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 is required to receive large media files.
  • Enhanced Group Functionality
    • Allows for the ability to update, share & communicate with a subset community
  • Bar-code Identity
    • A user can add a contact to the BlackBerry Messenger contact list by displaying a 2-dimensional bar code that invitees can capture with their device cameras.
  • Reliable Contact Backup and Restore
    • Contacts are backed-up on a server and do not require the need for BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.

  • I was running a leaked version for the past 3 months and it worked when i downloaded the official just asked me if i wanted to replace the current version 5.0.8 to 5.0.33!!! It works and looks great!!!!!

    I have 5.0.0.8 and people can see my pic, except one person.

    I have a blackberry curve 8320. Can you tell me what the big difference is? I can tell save my personal pic on my profile, right? Do I still have to backup my contact list?
  • The UI is redone and the group bugs are gone. Also refer to the feature list in this post in comparison to your current version and it's compatibility.

  • Open a person's "Contact Profile". Once there open the menu and you'll see the option :).

  • Hey man, thanks for the info. I just downloaded and installed on my 8900, even though i had the leaked version 5.0.8, it all works fine! No green or red dots showing availability though. I have a question though, can you change the color of the background in the convo bubbles?
  • i did it through AppWorld and colpletely BRICKED my phone!! Yep, I'm in "paper weight" mode...i have to sit here and reinstall the OS...Thanks BB App World!!!

    i just downloaded bbm 5.0.0.33 and so did my friends but some of them cant see my pic and i can see theirs or visa versa...whats going on?

    Hi! I have BBM 5 on my 8310 4.5.0.174. I'm using BES with standard IT policy. And there's no "Save Message History" checkbox in the Options. Is this because of BES things or something else? Hope somebody helps me out! Thanks.

    When I try to click on the download link through my browser, it keeps saying that there is a connection error. I've tried links from the blackerry website as well as apps world. And none of them work? Any help would be appreciated.

    hi, when i go onto the official site to download bbm5 ota, i can select language, but then the next screen says next where the note is underneath, and i cant click the button. it just wont do anything. help pls
