According to an anonymous tipster who goes by the name of John Smith (haha), the leaked images of the BlackBerry Dakota/Magnum that I posted earlier today courtesy of @cellguru are fakes.
After reading through the entire email and taking a look at the accompanying images sent to our tips line, I can say that John Smith makes some very good and detailed observations.
Everything you see after the jump is unaltered and was copied directly from the email, including the two labeled images but except for the last two images which are the ones that were tweeted by @cellguru. Here’s a quote from the last line of the email:
Without seeing any pictures of the device not just sitting on a flat surface, but rather in someones hand…powered up…the back of the device…actually detailed pictures that weren’t taken on another BlackBerry with the flash on…We’re calling fake.
Keep that quote in mind! Until we see it in action or see something official from RIM everything said about this device is hearsay. Continue reading for all the details and be sure to share what you think in the comments!

A: Notice the gap between the screen and the bezel. The gap is wide enough that you can see the yellow from the plate below it. Also, you can see the “maroonish” color towards the bottom of the gap which lines up with the design which can be seen to the left of the bezel.
B: Notice how it appears that the screen is sitting crooked on top of the chrome? If you look to the far left of the screen, you will notice some silver confirming this. From here, if you follow the screen straight up, you will notice the angle of the screen confirming the gap pointed out in A.
C: If you look at C, you will again notice what appears to be a gap between the bezel and the screen itself. It appears that you can also see the plate again slightly and the design which appears on the plate.
D: Notice in Picture 1 that the end key is clearly red. You can compare it to the red of the numbers on the keypad. Looking at the picture below (which was also posted on CellularGurus twitter), you notice that the end key now appears to be green. Looking at the numbers on the keyboard here, it’s obvious that is no type of color imbalance taken in the photo that would make red appear green or any other shade of color other than red. There are two possibilities here. 1: the screen on top of the device is not the same as it is in the above picture. 2: the reason it is appearing “Green” or at least “lighter” than the original picture is that shown above is that the light “stone” color from the surface which it is laid on is reflecting through the plastic.

E: Note here that it again appears as if the screen is slightly laying on top of the silver support bar. With your eyes, start at the middle of the device under the menu/back keys and work your way down towards this area, and you will notice that the silver bar “gets skinner”, indicating again that the screen is slightly resting ON TOP of the bar.
So the question now is…What are we looking at? Without actually attempting to re-create (we may just do that), here’s our best educated guess:
- A BlackBerry Bold 9000 Bezel and Keypad and upper screen
- The bottom half of a Storm 9550 screen laid on top
Another thing which is interesting is the location of which “thecellularguru.com” and the “cellular guru” markings are placed. They are placed in such a location where they can easily cover-up any “line” which may be visible between the 9000 “upper screen” and the Storm 9550 “lower screen”. Seeing that the entire area is black (and almost TOO black if you compare it to the other black areas in both pictures), it appears as if these two logs were strategically placed in order to cover-up such line.
Without seeing any pictures of the device not just sitting on a flat surface, but rather in someones hand…powered up…the back of the device…actually detailed pictures that weren’t taken on another BlackBerry with the flash on…We’re calling fake.
