Oratio BlackBerry Screen Reader App For The Blind And Visually Impaired Now Available [Application]

By Mauricio

Miguel from LaBlackBerry let me know that HumanWare and Code Factory have teamed up with RIM to release a BlackBerry application for the blind and visually impaired called Oratio.

“We are proud to have worked closely with HumanWare and Research In Motion to deliver a screen reader application that is optimized to work with BlackBerry smartphones,” explained Eduard Sánchez, Code Factoy’s CEO. “This application offers a perfect symbiosis between the screen reader and the user’s BlackBerry smartphone.”“RIM worked closely with HumanWare and Code Factory in the development of this innovative and important BlackBerry app for visually impaired customers. We are very pleased that Oratio is now available in the market,” said Tyler Lessard, VP Global Alliances & Developer Relations, Research In Motion.

Oratio allows visually impaired individuals to access core BlackBerry functions:

  • Manage instant messaging, emails, SMS and MMS.
  • Make and receive calls with access to caller ID on incoming calls.
  • Manage contact list.
  • Manage your call log.
  • Schedule appointments and tasks with alarms and reminders.
  • Access to the phone’s settings, ring tones and speed dials.

Here are the app’s main features:

  • Intuitive and familiar audio user interface.
  • Easy-to-use customization options for frequently used settings.
  • Auto start mode when the device turns on.
  • Different verbosity levels to allow users to define the amount of information provided.
  • Settings control over the voice rate and pitch.
  • Keyboard echo settings for text entry.
  • Easy-to-use command structure.

Oratio is available for a one time charge of $449.00. While that price may seem very steep (it is), consider how much is spent on other visual aides and assistance for the visually impaired. Right now only BlackBerry users on AT&T with an OS higher than OS 4.6.1.297 can use this application, but support for more devices is coming soon. According to the HumanWare rep I spoke with only AT&T signed up with RIM to offer this service.
