CardStar today released a free application for BlackBerry smartphones that allows users to carry their loyalty cards with them, without the actual cards! By saving your loyalty card membership numbers in this app you can make your keyring or wallet a bit lighter.

Leave those bulky plastic “reward cards” and “club cards” at home! The CardStar App lets you easily store, manage and quickly retrieve your reward, club, and loyalty cards on your smart phone, where they can be scanned directly from your screen at most merchants.

Want to consolidate your cards but you don’t have a smart phone, get the CardStar Card.

Also, receive coupons and deals to all your local and national merchants, at no cost to you!

  • Built in support for loyalty programs throughout the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and around the world -– just enter your membership number and you’re ready to go.
  • Advanced options for adding cards not included in the CardStar merchant database.
  • One touch access to additional merchant information and store locator.

This is definitely a great app to have especially if you’re a member of many reward/loyalty programs. For more info go to mycardstar.com or click here from your BlackBerry Browser for an OTA download.

What would make this app KILLER in my book is if it could use the BlackBerry camera to read in new cards. Talk about making it easy to use, a user could be up and running with it in just minutes!

I agree! That would be an awesome feature.

Once they had that, the next obvious step would be to build in support for Google's QR codes they are pushing. Seems to me a natural progression since they already “do” coupons.

I wish the app wasn't so huge though (3.6MB). My poor Storm is bumping up on it's limit, I will have to eliminate some stuff to get it on there unless I can talk my boss into upgrading me to a Storm2 with more RAM. Works fine on my Tour though.

Well I entered in a bunch of cards (some grocery, airline, hotel, and car rental) and I can't for the life of me figure out what logic this app uses to sort the cards you've entered. They need to make this app either sort all entries by name, or by the categories you use when entering, or something. But a random scattered list makes it hard to bring one up.

Also, if they're reading this, making the card number entry field default to “numeric entry mode” would sure make life easier since you wouldn't have to use two hands to enter numbers (one thumb has to keep the alt key held down, the field won't “lock” into numeric mode).

I was very disappointed that the app didn't work. I loaded lots of cards and tried scanning one at the grocery store and it didn't work. I really thought it would and was so excited about it. I guess I'll just have to wait for Verizon to get iPhones.

  • Yeah, Right

Disappointing, at best. Entered 1 card, fortunately – store scanner could not read the on-screen image. And WHY would you not default the numeric entry field to use numbers? Ever try typing in 9 – 12 digits with one finger while holding down the ALT key? Awkward, at best. How about a nice web interface where you can enter everything and send it to yourself?

Oh – and a screen that bar code scanners can actually read would be nice.
