I have some not good news for BlackBerry users on CDMA networks who were looking forward to trying BlackBerry 6 in the next few months. According to Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, CDMA networks may not get OS 6.0 until next year:
Devices running BlackBerry OS 6.0 may not reach CDMA networks until next year, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said in a research note today. Industry sources said that the OS is in “beta testing” and should ship with its first GSM device, likely the BlackBerry 9800, before the end of September. CDMA devices, however, aren’t so far and could be three to six months behind, pushing their launches either to the end of the year or early 2011.
The supposed reason for this delay is RIM’s attempt to get OS 6.0 out to as many customers as possible on GSM networks first since “up to four fifths of the world uses GSM and would give RIM the quickest possible reach”. Of course, since this is coming from an analyst and not from RIM, we’ll have to wait for some official info before jumping to conclusions.
If all goes well we should see a few new BlackBerry smartphones and OS 6.0 before the end of the year.
