RIM Trademarks “SurfBook” In Canada – Another Name For The BlackBerry Tablet?

It’s been about a month since we last heard about the rumored BlackBerry Tablet. So far we know that QNX Software Systems might be behind the tablet’s OS, RIM purchased the BlackPad.com domain and we might even see it before the end of the year. Some new info has come to light in the form of another possible name for the tablet: SurfBook.
According to Engadget, RIM has filed for the “SurfBook” trademark in Canada. If you look at the wares section of the CIPO filing you’ll notice it says “video phones and tablet computers for the wireless transmission of data and/or voice signals” in the list. The naming convention for SurfBook is pretty obvious and goes along with earlier rumors that said RIM’s tablet would be a companion device, allowing users to “surf” their BlackBerry and the web. Keep in mind that none of this confirms the BlackBerry Tablet’s existence or that SurfBook is going to be a name for it.
If RIM follows up with a similar trademark filing in the United States with the USPTO, I’m sure things will get interesting. For more info on the trademark data check it out here on the CIPO website.
