“No institution can possibly survive if it needs geniuses or supermen to manage it. It must be organized in such a way as to be able to get along under a leadership composed of average human beings.” Sounds true and perhaps the same thought must be on those few minds that saw a can-do attitude in Thorsten Heins, current CEO and President of RIM who needs no introduction any more.
When Heins was being appointed as RIM’s new CEO in Jan 2012, not only eyebrows were raised, but this announcement almost knocked people down with a feather.
Heins joined RIM in 2007 and he worked as a COO and product Engineer, supervising global portfolio of BlackBerry super phones. Before joining RIM, Thorsten was a CTO at Siemens and his work portfolio includes couple of management positions in both hardware and software businesses.
Thorsten hails from a science background and he completed his PG in science and physics from the University of Hannover, Germany. He is also a proud member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce Inc. So this was about Thorsten’s brief carrier history, now let’s put on our thinking caps about why Heins appeared as the right candidate to RIM for steering things in the right direction.
Pointless to mention that RIM has been going through a rough phase, while its rivals have achieved so much, RIM is still struggling for a viable place in the market. What is worth mulling is that why RIM is lagging behind? Is it because it rested on its laurels? Or it failed to see an opportunity on time? Reasons could be many; after all a successful organization doesn’t lose its shine in one day.
“Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” Besides right skills, knowledge, and attitude, it is extremely important for a leader to keep an eye on current market trends because that’s where many opportunities lie. Sensing a viable opportunity on time is all that a leader must do and Heins seems to do the same.
As Heins recently stated in one of his interviews, there are so many challenges in front of him but instead of dwelling on past mistakes, Heins is keen about making a fresh start.
Heins laid it on the line and recently revealed to the media that his clear focus is going to remain on BB 10 smartphones, which are scheduled for 2013 first quarter release. That’s the only ray of hope which can bring the company back on an old track of success and growth.
Perhaps, it’s a sheer straight forwardness which makes people feel that the decision of putting some tough responsibilities on Heins’ shoulders will eventually be proved as an apt decision. A thing worth noticing is that instead of blamestorming, it is brainstorming on which Heins is stressing upon. That’s a clear sign of a true leader. After coming into limelight, Heins has never minced his words. Whenever he came in front of media, he appeared responsible, honest, and straight forward.
Heins seems to know the fact that consumer is the king and will always remain a king. Till a company doesn’t adopt a consumer oriented outlook, chances are bleak that it will succeed, even after offering best innovative products. Of course one can’t take the innovation aspect for granted.
It may seem easier to turnaround strategies and taking some tough decisions but the journey ahead is not easy for Heins who is at present full of hopes. Whatever may happen, let’s wish Heins all the success in his future endeavors. We are hoping to see RIM on leading position, once again.
