That day is not far when an intuitive app in your smart phone will let your friends know about your feelings. And it won’t happen on iOS or Android either. No, this technology is arriving exclusively on Blackberries!
According to the latest reports, RIM has applied for a patent for an app which will be able to read user’s mood, guessing from the words typed by him and his blood pressure. Apart from that, it will be able to recognize facial expressions and the degree of hardness which the user is applying for pressing the keys. An extract from this US application of patent – No. 20120182309, suggests that this technology will be featuring sensors for Galvanic skin response which may be capable of depicting user’s various biological phenomenon like blood pressure, heart rate, control of muscle, facial gestures, quacking etc.
Besides all this, the new technology will be capable of expressing the emotions experienced by the user, which is indeed going to be a revolutionary thing in mobile technology. Does it mean that all emoticons like smile and frown will be bygone things in the upcoming time?
Well once you would get your hands on this app, you will not miss these emoticons because besides reading your expression there will be add-on visual signs as well, for example – ‘LIKE THIS IF YOU’RE ANGRY’.
This new and intuitive app will increase the pace of typing a message because the user won’t have to waste time in searching for an appropriate emoticon. Instead, the app will automatically suggest his current expressions.
Different leading tech-industry analysts expressed their opinion regarding RIM’s new ambitious patent.
Roel Vertegaal (Associate professor of human-computer interaction) from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., said that technology still has a long way to go when it comes to reading human expressions and RIM’s new leading edge smart phone may be successful in overcoming this drawback.
Duncan Stewart (Technology research director), Deloitte Canada said that in today’s tech world, the only apparent way for an app to create a different place for itself is to come up with an innovative idea because there are already so many apps in the market that there is hardly any space for new and innovative ones.
Stewart further added that gone are the days when the entire patent process (from its inception phase till end) would take around 5 year time. Now it is possible to grab a patent within just one year. So basically, Blackberries with mood reading abilities might be with us in just one year.
Leading tech giants who are striving for creating strong USP are exploring all avenues in intuitive gesture based technology. For instance, Microsoft applied for a patent in the beginning of this year, which deals with tracking web users’ emotions during video chats, while updating status on Facebook etc.
RIM refused to divulge more details on the company’s patent application by briefly stating that they have always paid attention on innovation and research.
What do you think? Will this new gesture based technology be the saving grace for RIM?
