In the past, Blackberry App World only featured mobile applications. With the recent name change of the market to Blackberry World, it signaled the supply of fresh content. More recently, Blackberry (remember they’re not RIM anymore) reminded us that Blackberry World will now include movies, music and TV shows too.
Today, just before the BB10 livestream event, the new Blackberry World went live. Can I just say that the latest redesign is nothing short of stellar?! Now, the premiere Blackberry marketplace includes mobile apps, music, movies and TV shows!
Not only can you purchase movies, but you can rent them, as well. The average purchase price for movies in Blackberry World seems to be between $11.99 and $19.99. Video rentals are available for $2.99 or $3.99, depending on the movie; newer movies are obviously more expensive.
Music prices, on the other hand, are certainly reasonable and like the video rentals, depend almost entirely on the content. The concept is fairly straightforward, newer music is more expensive, and older music is relatively cheap.
One of the biggest things that come to mind when considering additional content like this is the quantity and quality. If Blackberry World doesn’t have enough material, or more specifically enough fresh content, no one is going to buy anything. As far as I can tell, there are no issues here. Movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Taken 2, TED, The Bourne Legacy, and Snow White and the Huntsman are now at the top of the popular listings. For TV shows, there’s The Walking Dead (must have), How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, Breaking Bad, and even Spartacus! As far as music, right off the bat you can see Imagine Dragons, One Direction (go ahead and boo, I’ll wait), Rihanna, Pitbull, and of course Alicia Keys.
In order to obtain the new content and start downloading it to your Blackberry 10, you’ll need to have a Blackberry ID. Obviously, it’s free to register for an ID, and it will serve as your universal account once you start using the Blackberry 10 platform.
All in all, Blackberry World is not off to a bad start. It’s actually quite surprising to see a lot of the content that is currently available, especially so close to launch. At least we can rest assured that when our Blackberry 10 devices arrive, there will be plenty of material waiting for us!
What do you think of the new redesign? What do you think of the content that is available? Are you excited or disappointed by what you see? Let us know in the comments below!
