This morning, during the official Blackberry 10 launch event, Blackberry surprised everyone by announcing that none other than superstar Alicia Keys is the new Global Creative Director of the company. The new position at Blackberry was created specifically so that the company could heighten awareness and interest in the new platform.
Essentially, Keys will be tasked with boosting the Blackberry brand to a whole new level of fandom. Of course, this won’t include undeserved attention; rightfully meaning that Blackberry is actually going to show off the platform instead of using blind advertising.
During the conference, Keys talked about how she would achieve such a lofty goal of launching Blackberry to new heights. She’s going to work directly with renowned artists and professionals, in a campaign to show off just what the Blackberry 10 platform can do. The Blackberry community and anyone else paying attention will be able to see how these professionals use their new Blackberry 10 device and just what they are able to do with it.
Considering Microsoft enlisted the help of Jessica Alba to promote their new platform Windows Phone 8, it’s not all that surprising that Blackberry turned to a renowned individual for help with their own product launch. Of course, it is undeniably remarkable that they created an entirely new position for Alicia Keys, and officially added her onto payroll. When you realize that Keys is a 14-time Grammy Award winner, and private entrepreneur with a solid foot in the business world, that surprise fades away- well, a little bit anyways.
Of course, Blackberry also took the time to send out a press release, and create a new feature at Inside Blackberry, to summarize all of the changes, and the overall impact, that Alicia Keys will be making in her new role.

Renowned film director Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City) and author Neil Gaiman (Coraline, Stardust, The Sandman) will join Keys as the first three “BlackBerry Partners” leveraging the power of the new platform to create original content and special user engagements. The essence of these creative projects is that they are collaborations between the artist, BlackBerry and BlackBerry users around the world.
