I love Rock Band and Guitar Hero games, they’re lots of fun especially when a close group of friends is involved. Ever since the music game craze hit mainstream, we’ve seen lots of music style games become available. There are lots of reiterations of the Rock Band and Guitar Hero series, along with a fair share of knock-off titles. There are plenty of portable versions too.
Take this next app, for example which is tailored specifically for Blackberry 10 handsets. Tap Beats Heavy Metal is a Rock Band/ Guitar Hero style game that sees you tapping on-screen queues in tune with the background music. Bow chicka wow tap!
Four buttons are displayed at the very bottom of the screen, each with their own respective color: green, red, yellow, blue. The notes slide down the frets at varying speeds and your job is to tap the bottom buttons at the most opportune moment. Doing so will reward you with a nice riff and plenty of extra points which are added to your total score.
The colors are vivid and bright, and the songs are fantastic- if you like Heavy Metal anyway. There’s nothing licensed when it comes to music however. You play through a whole slew of generic tracks, but don’t let that deter you. They are definitely fun to play and great to listen to.
When you first start the game, only one track is available to you. As you play better and better and get a higher score for each song, more unlock and become available. It’s done using a point system, earn enough points and the next song tier unlocks. Simple enough!
Like with most music titles, total score and a “Streak” counter are displayed at the top of the screen. They are updated every time you rack up your score, or strum through a multiplier by stringing riffs together without making a mistake. Essentially, if you’ve ever played a music based title before you should already have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting.
Although this game doesn’t really hold up to console quality standards that was never really the idea in the first place. It’s a great game to play to waste some time here and there, and it’s very easy to pick up and play. You can jump in and start riffing some tracks while you’re waiting at the barber, and jump out after completing a song when it’s time to get off the tram. Either way, it’s a great game for any music lover even if it’s Heavy Metal centric. My guess is that they will soon have a few spin-offs to offer with different music types. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before these developers cash –in on the idea, and I certainly don’t blame them.
Tap Beats Heavy Metal is only $0.99 through Blackberry World, less than the price of a serious latte at your local coffee shop. That means it’s a great purchase, especially for anyone that enjoys playing these types of games- let alone on your Blackberry 10 handset.
