SanDisk Announces World’s Largest Mobile Phone Memory Card Capacity With 16GB microSDHC and M2

Milpitas, Calif. September 29, 2008 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), a global leader in flash memory products, today announced it is bringing to market its 16GB* microSDHC™ and Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) mobile memory cards – the world’s largest removable storage capacity for mobile phones. Best Buy Mobile (NYSE: BBY) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) stores are the first major retail outlets in the United States to carry the 16GB capacity.

The fingernail-sized 16GB memory cards allow consumers to “wake up” the many storage-intensive features offered by today’s portable handsets such as music and video playback, high-definition digital camera functions, gaming and GPS applications.  In addition to the mobile phone, consumers can use the 16GB microSDHC card in a multitude of other devices, including video cameras, GPS receivers or MP3 players with a microSD™ slots such as SanDisk’s Sansa® players.

“Handsets have become far more than just phones – they’ve become mobile jukeboxes, mobile offices, even mobile movie theaters,” said Avi Greengart, Research Director for Mobile Devices at Current Analysis. “Flash memory cards have increased in storage capacity, but even an 8GB card may be too small for anyone with GPS map data, a few movies, a game or two, a presentation file and other applications. There is an acute need for more mobile storage capacity. 16GB gives consumers the ability to carry their digital content with them and still have room to do more with their mobile phones.”

Expected Pricing, Availability and Product Information

SanDisk’s 16GB microSDHC card has an MSRP of $99.99 and the 16GB M2 card has an MSRP of $129.99. The new 16GB capacity will be available at Best Buy Mobile stores in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November – the only major retailers in the United States to carry this mobile storage capacity in 2008.

MicroSD cards are designed for slot-equipped legacy mobile phones and can hold a maximum capacity of 2GB. Today’s microSDHC cards are available in 4GB, 8GB and now 16GB, are ideal for newer mobile phone models, most of which are compatible with these higher capacity cards. The Memory Stick Micro (M2) cards are designed for Sony Ericsson’s new generation of mobile phones, all of which are compatible with the 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacity levels. SanDisk’s 16GB mobile memory cards come with a five-year limited warranty.

Kingston Technology Adds 8GB microSDHC Cards to Growing Mobile Phone Memory Family

sdc4_8gb.jpg

Sydney, Australia – September 30, 2008 – Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, announced the addition of 8GB microSD High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash memory cards to its mobile memory storage line. Shipping immediately, the new 8GB microSDHC cards offer greater storage options to the latest mobile phones and digital devices in the smallest footprint available.

“Consumers are demanding more from their mobile phones, expecting them to double as music and portable game players, instant cameras, email communicators, browsers and navigators. Having enough storage capacity, particularly in the form of memory cards, keeps internal device memory free to deliver all this multi-functionality,” said Vaughan Nankivell, Regional Manager- Australia and New Zealand. “Our 8GB microSDHC cards are so roomy that mobile users can easily move entire digital libraries from a PC to their mobile phones — and beyond.”

Kingston 8GB microSDHC cards can store more than 1,500 digital songs*, more than 4,000 images from a 5MP cameraphone**, or up to eight hours of video***, greatly surpassing storage limits on mobile phones without Flash memory card slots.

The microSDHC format is emerging as the predominant mobile memory standard as more handset manufacturers, including HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, and Samsung, embrace it with compatible mobile phones. Recent models tested with the new Kingston 8GB microSDHC card include the BlackBerry Pearl 8120; the LG evV2 (VX9100) and Voyager (VX10000); as well as the Samsung BlackJack II (i617) and Glyde (U940). The new microSDHC 8GB card, Kingston part number is SDC4/8GB. Although the microSDHC format is identical in physical size to the original microSD card, microSDHC is compatible with microSDHC host devices only and not backward compatible with standard microSD-enabled devices or readers.

Backed by a lifetime warranty and free technical support, Kingston microSDHC Flash memory cards are available through distributors, resellers and retailers.

8855 SanDisk Launches 16GB microSDHC

It doesn’t seem to be “official” since it’s not on SanDisk’s site, but they’re out there. Price seems to range from $70-120 USD. I did a Google Product Search and found a few, don’t know how reliable the vendors are though.

If anyone else has more info let me know. If not, I’ll make a post when it’s up on the SanDisk site.

sandisk 16gb microsd med BlackBerry Devices With OS 4.5.0.81+ To Support 16GB Media Cards!

That’s what I’m talking about RIM! Way to stick it to the iPhone. I’ve always said “the iPhone may have 16GB of memory, but BlackBerry has unlimited memory.” By this I meant that BlackBerry devices can change out their media cards, which really means an unlimited source of memory (in regards to media and such).

Now that is even moreso true. How awesome is that?!

BlackBerry Device Software Media Card Size Limit
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0 Up to 2 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 Up to 4 GB

BlackBerry Device Software 4.3.0 Up to 8 GB
