Sometimes it’s good to hear an objective point of view about BlackBerry and its development. As hardcore BlackBerry fans, many of us may have a biased perspective. I myself always talk about how awesome my BlackBerry is, but I do recognize that there is room for improvement (which I’m sure RIM is working on).

On that note, Priya Ganapati of the Wired Gadget Lab put together an article with 5 things that RIM needs to fix in its BlackBerry devices.

Apple may get all the press, but the venerable BlackBerry is untouchable when it comes to sales. Three of the top five best-selling smartphones in the first quarter of the year were BlackBerries, according to research company The NPD Group.

So why aren’t the devices better? Sure, BlackBerry users rely on their physical keyboards to pound out e-mails, as they always have, and Research In Motion’s longstanding support for push notification and corporate mail servers means you’ll never miss an urgent message from the boss.

But even though BlackBerries have been adding gee-whiz features like multimedia playback and touchscreens, the devices still seem like a mishmash of undercooked ideas. Here are five things RIM needs to fix if it wants to maintain its lead.

Yesterday I posted about RIM’s acquisition of Torch Mobile and even included some info about WebKit and the Iris Browser. To the average user, none of that info may make sense or they may not even care as long as all it means is them getting a new BlackBerry Browser.

Sometimes it’s important to understand how things work and what they mean so you can get the most out of your BlackBerry experience. My buddy @ASacco has put together a great article explaining what RIM’s acquisition of Torch Mobile means for the BlackBerry Browser, and for you, the user.

Ask BlackBerry power users for their number one complaint about Research In Motion (RIM) handhelds, and nine times out of ten you’ll get the same answer: The BlackBerry Browser.

RIM’s BlackBerry browser ships along with all BlackBerry devices and is the “mandatory-default” web-browsing software for BlackBerry smartphones–you can’t set third-party browsers as the default…at least not yet.

The problem, errr, problems? The BlackBerry browser is slooooow, to say the least. Javascript-heavy pages consistently bring it to a standstill–unless, of course, you leave Javascript turned off. And the BlackBerry Browser frequently has problems rendering many common Web pages, so simply browsing the Web for a quick recipe or to answer a question can be like pulling teeth.

I raised the subject of the troublesome BlackBerry Browser to RIM’s Manager of Developer Relations Mike Kirkup last February, and Kirkup openly told me that RIM was well aware of the problem and that the company was working to address it.

We’ve already seen a full list of features for OS 5.0, the new BBM 5.0, a video of OS 5.0 running on the Curve 8900 and a Storm, but it’s always good to hear what others have to say about it. Zack Whittaker of ZDNet did a nice writeup with screenshots of OS 5.0.

News is spreading quickly within the underground BlackBerry community of a leak within Research in Motion, the company that makes the phone, of the latest BlackBerry operating system. Designed for the Curve, the new OS (which has been rumored for some time) could easily be the upcoming release for other models such as the popular Bold.

Intrepid student that I am, I downloaded it and installed it on my Curve 8900, and through the perfectly seamless upgrade transition, I have discovered a bunch of new features which not only progresses what these devices can do on a software level, but also show a little more about where RIM is going and the connections it is making with other companies – Google, for example.

To be honest, it’s not easy seeing what’s new in the settings unless I constantly switch back and forth between the latest released BlackBerry OS and the leaked one. I can’t be bothered with that, so some of what you see below may already be old-hat (and evidently, I haven’t noticed since owning my phone).

I always find myself conversing (nearly arguing haha) with certain people about why the BlackBerry is better than an iPhone.

Many people look at the BlackBerry and an iPhone’s  features that are visible on the surface, but not too many take the time to seriously look into why they should get one or the other. Don’t misunderstand, I’ve played with an iPhone on a few occasions and it failed to impress me each time. Yes the UI looks nice and is sleek, but you can customize your BlackBerry with both free and premium themes to look just as sleek if not sleeker. Don’t even get me started on their App Store…

Anton Wahlman of Seeking Alpha has put together a great list of BlackBerry’s 26 advantages over an iPhone, which I’ve included after the jump.

I can tell you now that there aren’t just 26 advantages that the BlackBerry has over the iPhone, but here’s a good starter list to arm yourself with in case you ever find yourself verbally dueling with an iPhone enthusiast like I do .

1. Blackberry can be used on almost every carrier in the world (over 475 of them). In the US, the iPhone is available on AT&T (T) only.
2. Blackberry is available in five form factors – small keyboard, large keyboard, no keyboard, flip phone, and candy-bar.
3. Most Blackberries have keyboards, so you can actually type fast and with no errors. Helps while driving, walking, carrying something in your other hand – all the time. iPhone: well…
4. Blackberry uses standardized (=inexpensive and available everywhere in the world) MicroUSB connector for synchronization/charging. iPhone has a much larger proprietary 30-pin connector.
5. Some carriers such as Verizon (VZ) and Sprint (S) offer unlimited international Blackberry data roaming for $40/month or less. iPhone does not. This could save you literally tens of thousands of dollars when you are abroad.
6. If your Blackberry is on T-Mobile USA, it also offers unlimited WiFi calling from anywhere in the world. This is with your existing number – in and out – so no new special number, procedure, etc. iPhone cannot do this (because it is only on AT&T; only T-Mobile USA offers this), and it can save you well over $100 per day when you’re abroad. Think $1 per minute savings, and you’re on the phone two hours per day. That’s $120/day.
7. Blackberry has expandable memory. iPhone is fixed and sold at 8, 16 or 32 gig only.
8. Blackberry has removable and expandable battery. iPhone is fixed.
9. Blackberry allows programs to multitask. iPhone has limited multitasking.
10. The newest Blackberry screen resolution is 480×360. iPhone is 480×320.
11. Blackberry allows communicating peer-to-peer via PIN identifier, circumventing the email system. No such iPhone equivalent.
12. Skype (EBAY) on the Blackberry? Yes, from anywhere to anywhere. Skype on iPhone? Only if you’re on WiFi.
13. Sling on the Blackberry? Yes, it’s free. Sling on iPhone? $30.
14. Google (GOOG) Voice on the Blackberry? Yes, it’s free. Google Voice on iPhone? Verboten.
15. Blackberry can be synchronized to multiple computers simultaneously, if you have multiple computers.
16. Multiple Blackberries can receive the same email feeds simultaneously, if you have multiple Blackberries.
17. Blackberry can sort the address book entries by company name, so you can scroll down a long list of names you don’t remember, but you just want to see who works for which company. Aside from sorting, the iPhone can take several seconds to search your address book, particularly if you have several thousand address book entries.
18. Blackberry isn’t slowed down by having, say, 10,000 or 100,000 address book entries. Try using an iPhone with 10,000 address book entries.
19. All major instant messengers are available on Blackberry.
20. Blackberry is available with multiple browsers from multiple suppliers. iPhone is available only with its standard Safari browser.
21. Blackberry synchronizes with iTunes – and every other media management program.
22. 22. Blackberry models with 480 pixel resolution and WiFi offer PrimeTime2Go, an $8/month TV service that works as a DVR.
23. Blackberry fits as many emails in the inbox as there is memory available (typically many tens of thousands). iPhone is limited to 200 emails. Yes, iPhone has a remote look-up capability, but that doesn’t do you any good when you’re on an airplane or are otherwise out of coverage.
24. Price: Unlimited iPhone voice/data service, including unlimited SMS, is $150/month. Blackberry can be had for much less. For example, unlimited Blackberry service is offered on Sprint for $100/month, T-Mobile USA $125/month, MetroPCS $50/month, although AT&T/Verizon match the iPhone at $150/month.
25. Prepaid “no contract” flexibility: The AT&T web site says the iPhone is sold with a 2-year contract only, although once upon a time it offered a “contract-free” iPhone if you paid close to $899 up-front for the iPhone itself. In contrast, you can get prepaid no-contract Blackberry service on any old or new T-Mobile USA Blackberry handset for $65/month (600 minutes, unlimited Blackberry/Internet, but no SMS), or you can get truly unlimited-everything prepaid $50/month service from MetroPCS, if its handset selection and coverage areas are acceptable to you. That’s ONE THIRD the cost of the iPhone, and there is no contract.
26. Blackberry is an encrypted military-grade security platform, with 100% market share at FBI, CIA, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, major consultancies and major investment banks. In contrast, iPhone has security vulnerabilities. Please see this document for details as to why the Blackberry is the only platform approved for use in our national security agencies. It compares against the iPhone and Microsoft Mobile platforms (.pdf).

The BlackBerry Curve 8520 hit U.S. shelves earlier this week, and though it certainly won’t send hard-core CrackBerry addicts rushing to T-Mobile stores to scoop one up–it’s an entry-level device, meant for new smartphone users–the handheld actually has more “new” BlackBerry features and hardware tweaks than any other device Research In Motion (RIM) has released in a year.

I attended RIM’s Curve 8520 launch event on Tuesday in Manhattan, and I’ve been using the device constantly since then. Here’s my list of nine Curve 8520 features you won’t find on any other current BlackBerry device–though some will no doubt make their way to upcoming BlackBerrys.

If you’ve been wondering whether or not the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 from T-Mobile is right for you, my buddy @ASacco has put together a great article you should definitely read.

Today, Research In Motion’s (RIM) brand new BlackBerry Curve 8520 goes on sale in the United States, through T-Mobile. The Curve 8520, RIM’s third iteration of the Curve, falls directly in the middle of both RIM and T-Mobile’s Curve product lines.

After T-Mobile initially released the Curve 8320 in September, 2007, it quickly became one of the carrier’s best selling smartphones. More than a year later, T-Mobile was the first U.S. carrier to release RIM’s second-generation Curve, the BlackBerry 8900. And today, the carrier is first to offer the next Curve, the BlackBerry 8520.

Yesterday, I attended RIM’s Curve 8520 launch event in New York City, where the company showed off all kinds of up-and-coming wares along with the new device. I spent quite a bit of time with the new Curve and was able to mostly size it up.

@ASacco has done it again with yet another great article, this time focused on BlackBerry Desktop Manager (BBDM) for Mac.

Research In Motion (RIM) recently announced that it will finally release Macintosh-compatible desktop management software for BlackBerry handhelds this fall. I was lucky enough to get a quick hands-on demonstration this morning from RIM Product Manager Andrey Feldman at an event in New York City, and I dug up a few previously unannounced tidbits about RIM’s upcoming software release for Apple computer users with BlackBerrys.

Experiencing problems with that new BlackBerry Tour? Is your tried-and-true Curve 8300 acting up on ya? Have no fear; you don’t necessarily have a “lemon” on your hands.

BlackBerry devices, and smartphones in general, can be a “finicky” bunch of gadgets. But thankfully, there are some quick fixes for common problems, many of which I’ve covered on CIO.com before in my BlackBerry Bible.

Here’s an article where a kid asks RIM’s Co-Chief Executives Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis if they are planning on making a BlackBerry that is suitable for kids.

TORONTO (Reuters) – It took a child to stump the creators of the BlackBerry, one of the world’s top selling smartphones and a part of most executives’ attire.

“Are you going to make a phone more for kids so that my Mom will let me get one?” the child said from the packed audience at the annual general shareholders’ meeting at Canada’s Research in Motion on Tuesday.

That kid knows a quality smartphone when he sees one. Very good choice .

I’ve heard stories of people in business meetings making believe they’re checking official emails and instead are playing Brick Breaker. I haven’t personally seen such a thing happen so I can’t tell you from experience, but it definitely wouldn’t surprise me if it were true.

Some people ask if there is such a thing as a BlackBerry addiction, or is it a general addiction to technology and having to stay connected? I think it’s because of how a BlackBerry allows you to stay connected that it is in fact a BlackBerry addiction. Not all cell phones or smartphones can keep you as connected like a BlackBerry can.

An article I read by The Globe And Mail titled “Mind your BlackBerry manners, or risk your career” goes over some instances where the BlackBerry addiction has been a problem.

In one situation, Shawn Kahandaliyanage had come up with a way of being able to continue using his BlackBerry while walking by following a person with brightly colored shoes so that he did not have to worry about walking into something or someone. Mr. Kahandaliyanage ended up following a woman into the ladies room. I guess the shoe thing wasn’t such a good strategy. It might have worked if he had stayed mindful of his surroundings, but sometimes you get so into your BlackBerry that you can’t help but not pay attention.

In another situation, New York State Senator Malcolm Smith was unseated from his rank as majority leader because a billionaire power broker was offended by Mr. Smith paying more attention to his BlackBerry than to him during a meeting. Someone like Mr. Smith should know when and when not to use his BlackBerry, and if it will offend others.

There is a humorous side to the BlackBerry addiction as Jerry Seinfeld points out, but non BlackBerry users may not understand it and may be offended by it. The solution? Be more stealthy about your BlackBerry usage! Just know when to use your BlackBerry and when not to.

I’ll admit, every time I see my BlackBerry’s LED turn red I feel I have to check it. Sometimes it’s just easier not looking at my BlackBerry to avoid seeing the red light (haha).

You can also use applications like BerryBuzz to customize your LED to blink different colors according to the type of message received. Applications like these help you prioritize message alerts. For example, BerryBuzz allows you to set special alerts for each email account or one for all. If you have a business email that is more important than your personal email you can have it blink a certain color so you can tell those email messages apart when receiving them.

The one thing I always ask people that ask me “iPhone or BlackBerry” is that they have to decide, do they want a toy or a smartphone that rocks tool. Andrew and I are in agreement about the iPhone being more of a toy than a device that can provide useful and multiple functionalities that we would use in day-to-day activities.

Don’t get me wrong, the BlackBerry can be just as much of a toy as the iPhone with its own variety of games and entertainment but what makes the BlackBerry better is that it is for both work AND play.

Despite pushing 1 million units on the Apple iPhone-hungry masses in just a weekend, the Apple iPhone 3G S isn’t going to single-handedly unseat the BlackBerry from atop the smartphone mountain.

And regardless of what the folks at Crowd Science found through their survey — which indicated BlackBerry users will ditch their CrackBerrys for iPhones in droves — the iPhone won’t replace Research In Motion’s BlackBerry, which has become synonymous with business mobility. They’re affectionately called CrackBerrys for a reason, right?

Let’s be clear: Apple’s iPhone and the new iPhone 3G S are killer smartphones. They are slick, they are cool and they pack a lot of punch. Plus, pulling out your iPhone in a crowded coffee shop or bar is pretty much a wink and a nod acknowledging that you are part of an elite group of insiders who “get it.”

But, to me, the iPhone is more about fashion than function. It’s a toy, not a tool. Yes, you can get e-mail and send messages, you can make and receive calls, you can snap photos and now record video all from your device. But you can do all of that with a BlackBerry, too. And the BlackBerry has more than a decade of smartphone innovation under its belt compared to the iPhone’s measly three generations.

The Pre is here; Palm recently released the much-anticipated Pre smartphone to the world-and the fate of the company very much depends on whether or not the device is a hit. Palm, former king of the PDA market, is attempting to pull itself back to the forefront of the smartphone game with the likes of RIM and Apple, and the Pre will no doubt be instrumental to its success…or lack thereof.

A while back, I penned a piece for CrackBerry called “Top 10 Reasons Why the iPhone Is NO BlackBerry,” in which I pointed out why Apple’s iPhone might be fine for your kid brother or all the Mac-heads at school or work, even your mom, but it doesn’t hold a candle to BlackBerry when the two are stacked up next to each other (I’ll be weighing in on the state of this ongoing debate soon now that the iPhone 3G S has been announced).

While the Pre is certainly exciting and I look forward to some quality thumbs-on time with it, I didn’t rush out to pick one up this week, nor will I be trading in my beloved ‘Berry for a Palm device anytime soon; the Palm Pre’s simply no BlackBerry.

Research In Motion’s (RIM) Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) is the largest BlackBerry event of the year, and as such, all the heavies in the space–from BlackBerry administrators to analysts and pundits, as well as power-users and unabashed CrackBerry addicts–come out to see the latest and greatest the BlackBerry world as to offer.

CIO.com was on the scene in Orlando this week for WES, and I spent hours in the trenches BlackBerry Solutions Showcase speaking with various vendors about their newest wares. I came across a plethora of noteworthy products and services, too, and though many more deserve mention, I’ve culled my 10 favorite offerings, listed in alphabetical order, for folks who couldn’t make the show.
