Chuck and Matthew from TDC Group were on hand showing off the latest in Freeance – simply put, this solution enables ArcGIS users to extend the Geodatabgse to the field using Blackberry devices (like the new Blackberry Bold). Given Blackberry’s penetration into the entrprise space this is a natural fit! Using Freeance, enterprises can now use data from their enterprise GIS and back office databases in mobile applications on BlackBerry smartphones. Mobile workers in government, utilities and business can now easily update their databases for uses including GIS, to respond to emergencies, handle service calls, record new infrastructure, conduct inspections, map hazardous spills, inventory assets, and see crime events by time and location. your users can use a familiar device to add GPS points while in the field, fill in custom forms, display aerial imagery and much more. See the demo below and see also http://www.freeance.com/mobile

I thought this was pretty interesting. AT&T is going to be launching a solution that will enable educators to go beyond traditional classroom lectures and teaching methods.
The mobile student interactive response solution from Turning Technologies, a developer of interactive response systems, actively enhances the classroom experience for both students and educators. The solution can work within a traditional classroom environment or remotely for distance learning. Additionally, the mobile application can be used on Web-enabled AT&T smartphones, eliminating the need for clickers or other peripheral classroom equipment.
The interactive student response systems also offer the ability to:
Create a dynamic, interactive classroom experiences, increasing student attentiveness and comprehension.
Immediately address misconceptions of instruction, allowing for on-the-fly customized knowledge construction experiences.
Seamlessly combine instruction with assessment, including the cumulative tracking of class and individual student results.
Allow everyone, even the shyest of students, to become equally involved in honest, no-risk answering.
Reinforce content via instant polling.
I don’t know how fast schools and colleges will catch onto this, but being in college myself I’d be interested in trying this out.

Here is an article I thought was pretty interesting. I know a BlackBerry does its own security checks on start up, but some people might never turn their phones off.
Today, mobile antivirus scanners are experiencing a market rebound, stimulated by smartphone sales — especially to businesses. Mobile antivirus products are now available from popular Win32 antivirus vendors (e.g., F-Secure, McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro, Sophos) and “mobile specialists” like SMobile and Airscanner. Mobile antivirus scanners are even available for iPhone and BlackBerry handhelds.

A big congratulations to the Most Golden Olympian, Michael Phelps. Not only is he the Most Golden Olympian, but he also happens to be a BlackBerry user!
Phelps, who won six golds and two bronze medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics, had some idea how big Michael mania is in the United States. He said he had received a phone call from President Bush and over 4,000 messages on his BlackBerry in the 24 hours since winning his eighth gold medal, in the 4×100 medley relay.

MobileMagazine has a really nice write up on the pros and cons of touchscreen cell phones. After reading this article, one might think twice about possibly getting a touchscreen. Unless you’re a hardcore BlackBerry fan or just want the hottest new phone, which in this case I am talking about the Thunder/Storm.
While the article is titled “of touchscreen cell phones,” the BlackBerry isn’t just any cell phone, its the best smartphone (in my opinion) and I hope the Thunder/Storm will not disappoint.

Know someone who doesn’t know when to put his/her BlackBerry down? Or don’t know yourself?
The Chatham Daily News has an article that is a nice guide on proper BlackBerry etiquette.
This article would actually be a good response to Living With a BlackBerry Addict, which is a funny little read if you have a few minutes to kill. At least I found it funny, some people might find it sad that the author’s husband is that addicted.
