New Worry for Mobile Phones: Malware

Posted by Mauricio on Oct 6, 2008 at 8:44 AM | Comments

You’ve been battling malware – viruses, worms, spyware and the like – on your PC for years.

Is your phone the next battleground?

Security experts think it could be, particularly if it’s a smart phone, a handset that has a full operating system and can run applications much as a desktop computer does. The more that phones can perform the same functions as PCs, the greater the chance they will have similar vulnerabilities, experts say.

“I’d put it in the looming-threat category,” said Natalie Lambert, a senior analyst who covers mobile security issues for Forrester, a technology research firm. “There’s huge potential.”

Experts caution that consumers should put that potential threat in perspective. Other security issues – such as simply losing a phone – are arguably of more concern to mobile-phone users today.

SAP Builds on Mobile Strategy

Posted by Mauricio on Oct 3, 2008 at 9:15 AM | Comments

SAP has revealed plans to extend its partnership with Research In Motion (RIM) to other mobile providers.

The firm’s deal with the BlackBerry maker is just the beginning, Mike de la Cruz, mobile and analytics senior vice president at SAP, told customers at an event in Wembley Stadium as part of SAP’s World Tour 2008 road show.

“We will take the innovation we have with RIM and move this forward,” said Cruz.

The RIM partnership, agreed in May 2008, allows BlackBerry users to access SAP applications from their device.

SAP said that it intends to push its partner network to new boundaries. “SAP is transforming and this is not only about changing our product line but about changing our business partner strategy,” Cruz explained.

The company is being driven to become more relevant to mobile users because the smartphone has developed as the main interface for business transactions, according to Cruz.

He explained that the large take-up in emerging markets means that developing countries are skipping the phase where business is conducted on a PC and performing all business operations on their mobile devices.

Cruz added that key to SAP’s partnerships with mobile providers would be the development of ‘push’ SAP applications.

BlackBerry Cell Phones Used to Put Drugs on the Street

Posted by Mauricio on Oct 2, 2008 at 10:16 PM | Comments

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) — in cooperation with other federal agencies — capped off a two-year investigation into a drug trafficking operation, in which dealers used untraceable cell phones to get drugs onto American streets.

The DEA raided a business in southern California on Tuesday, which officials said provided materials for drug operations.  The business was called Data Locking — which allegedly set up Blackberry cell phones to communicate with numerous drug runners.

Authorities said the cell phones were programmed to communicate at the highest levels of encryption — meaning they are extremely difficult to trace.  The Blackberry phones, however, were actually not even capable of making calls.  Instead, authorities said the drug traffickers mainly used e-mails and text messages on the phones.

SoftGen to Distribute Device Tracking Software

Posted by Mauricio on Sep 30, 2008 at 8:52 PM | Comments

Under the new arrangement, SoftGen will have access to the full range of tracking software products for iPods, desktop PCs and Macs, notebooks, mobile phones and PDAs.

The Bak2u tracking offerings notify users of the location of their mobile device and who is using it if it is lost or stolen. The mobile phone product does this via text message alerts to another chosen phone number and can be used to wipe information remotely. The GadgetTrak device tracker, meanwhile, is sold on a subscription model and accessed by users over the Internet via GadgetTrak’s servers. Both products will be sold locally under the Bak2u brand.

Antitheft.net.au director, Jason Rogers, said it had been looking to expand sales of the tracking products in Australia across retail, reseller and online channels. Antitheft.net.au has been around for three years and is the agent for Bak2u and GadgetTrak across A/NZ and South East Asia. With rising mobile device use, he claimed there was an increased need for extra security measures. “We started getting interest from the retail outlets and decided to look for a partner. SoftGen fitted with where we are going and gives us access to the proper channels,” Rogers said.
