RIM has posted a security advisory (KB19701) that all BlackBerry Desktop Manager versions earlier than version 5.0 contain a vulnerability that would allow a malicious user to remotely execute code on your computer:
This advisory relates to a vulnerability in a Lotus Notes Intellisync DLL that the BlackBerry Desktop Manager may use. This vulnerability may allow a malicious user to perform an attack that leverages social engineering to achieve remote code execution on the computer running the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If the legitimate (logged in) user clicks a link to a malicious web site (for example, in an email message, in a browser, or an instant message) on the computer that is running the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, a vulnerability in an Intellisync component could allow the malicious user who sent the link or created the malicious web site to execute code on the computer using the privileges of the legitimate user.
Note: The affected Lotus Notes Intellisync DLL is included by default in all BlackBerry Desktop Manager installations. This vulnerability exists whether or not the DLL is used after installation.
Issue Severity: This vulnerability has a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score of 9.3.
Issue Status: Vulnerability confirmed. For more information, see the Resolution section.
To avoid becoming a victim of a malicious user RIM is recommending everyone update their BlackBerry Desktop Manager immediately to at least version 5.0.1. To download this update visit the BlackBerry Software Downloads page and select appropriate version in the drop-down menu. RIM has also issued the following workaround:
You can disable the Lotus Notes Intellisync functionality by unregistering the Intellisync component DLL, lnresobject.dll. Disabling the functionality prevents a malicious user from exploiting the vulnerability.
To unregister the DLL on the computer running the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, at a command line enter the command: regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\IS71 Connectors\Lotus Notes5.0\lnresobject.dll”

The guys over at RIMGeeks have been hard at work improving their useful BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife (BBSAK) desktop application. Since their last release of v1.6 there has been a minor update with some fixes and a new version update to v1.7.0.
New in v1.7.0
Auto Update Feature Now Included (upon load bbsak will check to verify you have the most current version install)
Compact view button now available in all expanded windows
Restore Apps completion popup now pops up at correct time
Some small speed tweaks also included with this version
v1.6.3 Fixes
Some users experienced read system errors completely fixed with v1.6.3
Form can now be maximized (hope it helps with resolution issues)

Darren let me know that he has updated his BlackBerry Master Control Program (MCP) to version 0.9.2.0 Beta 10.
MCP is a must have application for moderate to advanced BlackBerry users that allows you upgrade or downgrade your OS, load/save/erase modules, take screenshots, perform Java Loader commands, reset to factory defaults and so much more! What makes MCP awesome besides for all its features is that it comes in a portable version that you can install on a portable memory device (like a USB drive), allowing you to plug it in for use on any compatible PC.

@BRSDiddy let me know that BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac has been updated to version 1.0.1 Build 2.
This update “includes important bug fixes and enhancements to your data synchronization” and according to @BRSDiddy, syncing is significantly faster. I’ll update this post once official release notes become available, but for now, leave some comments if you notice any other changes.

This desktop app has helped me out a few times where I bricked my BlackBerry (not on purpose of course). Luckily I had made a backup of my 3rd party apps with BBSAK so it was easy to install all of them at once instead of one-by-one. Backing up 3rd party apps is not all BBSAK can do and RIMGeeks is continuously working to improve it with new features and fixes.

MLH Software let me know about a new beta BlackBerry application and desktop software they are working on called Blurts.
If you are like us, you sit in front of a PC most of the day with a BlackBerry in your pocket. Every time it rings you have to dig it out just to see who is calling, and you think to yourself, wouldn’t it be nice if the caller ID just popped up on my computer screen so I could see who is calling before going through the trouble to dig it out of my pocket?
Well that is exactly what Blurts is designed to do. A desktop app and a BlackBerry app talk via Bluetooth to display caller ID info and more.
I’m being told that this software might be available in two versions: a free version that will allow you to view alerts and a pro version with more features that will allow you to interact with those alerts (and more).

RIM has officially confirmed that the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac will be available for download on October 2nd!

Lyricidal (aka @theiexplorers) has just released a cool, free desktop app called Create-A-JAD that allows you to create your own OTA (.jad) or desktop (.alx) installer files for BlackBerry apps. In order to make these OTA or desktop installer files you need to have the COD files of the chosen app handy.
Here’s how it works:
Instructions
1) Enter information requested (All are required except for description)
2) Drag and drop all the files needed for your app install into the white box under Files.
3) If you haven’t already, enter the filename (no extension) and choose what type of install you need: .JAD is for OTA, .ALX is for Desktop Install, and Both does both of them.
4) Click Create It!
5) Enjoy your new OTA/Desktop Install!
Get Your OTA Up and Running
1) Upload all .cods required, the .jad, and the .htaccess file created to your webspace
2) Go to the link to your .jad file from your phone
3) Install away!
To Use In Desktop Install
1) Copy and paste the created .alx file in your OS’s folder (ie. 9530-v4.7.0.167_P4.0.0.205)
2) Copy and paste the .cod files into the Java folder (if you checked that box when creating the .alx) or into the same OS folder as step 1 (if you left the checkbox unchecked)
3) Install using AppLoader (Loader.exe) or Desktop Manager
You can download Create-A-JAD directly to your PC by clicking here. Make sure you backup your BlackBerry data before installing apps made by Create-A-JAD just in case something goes wrong. If you try this app be sure to leave some feedback in the comments!
