BlackBerry Rocks! changes happening this weekend

Posted by Mauricio on Feb 27, 2009 at 6:19 PM | Comments

BlackBerry Rocks! will be going through some changes this weekend.

  • Bad News: The site may be offline for a few hours at some point
  • Good News: When it’s back up it will be faster and better!

The changes and enhancements will allow BlackBerry Rocks! to properly sustain the amount of traffic it is receiving without the possibility of getting thrown offline (hopefully). Sorry for the inconvenience. Everything will be as quick and painless as possible :D .

Once everything is completed I will make an announcement post. Thanks for understanding.

*UPDATE* It seems like Guava restricted access to the original source of the ad even though it’s all over the Internet already ;-) .

This ad is pretty cool, but that last line kind of ruined it for me.

Sprint not getting the BlackBerry Bold or the Storm?

Posted by Mauricio on Feb 26, 2009 at 9:36 PM | Comments

Jon sent BlackBerry Cool what appears to be an online customer service chat where he asks a Sprint rep  if they would be getting the BlackBerry Bold or the Storm anytime soon.

Jon: “Hi. I’d really like to buy a Blackberry Bold but Sprint still doesn’t sell it. Can I buy it elsewhere and still set it up for Sprint service?”
Agent (Kate D): “I will be more than happy to answer your questions today.”
Agent (Kate D): “I do apologize, however, you will need a Sprint phone to receive Sprint service.”
Jon: “What’s the status of getting the Bold? I hear 1st quarter ‘09, now 3Q09.”
Agent (Kate D): “I do apologize, however, Sprint does not plan to release that phone onto the Sprint network.”
Jon: “How about the Storm?”
Agent (Kate D): “Neither of the phones are Sprint phones.”
Jon: “I know they’re not Sprint phones right now. I’m wondering when/if they will be.”
Agent (Kate D): “Jon, Sprint does not plan to release either of the phones onto the Sprint network. Neither of the phones are Sprint phones.”

Jon: “That’s too bad.”

That is too bad…if it’s true. According to those who left comments on the post by BlackBerry Cool, customer service reps can routinely be wrong since they don’t directly deal with the company’s product lineup.

Does anyone else have information about this?

How To: Install applications and themes via OTA with or without using data

Posted by Mauricio on Feb 26, 2009 at 3:51 PM | Comments

I know it can be frustrating to those who want to download a cool application or theme but can’t because it is only available through an Over-the-Air (OTA) download. You usually need a data plan in order to install applications through an OTA download, but in some cases you don’t.

Here are some examples of when you don’t need a data plan to install an OTA application:

  • The application is a theme
  • The application does not require a data plan or data connection to work
  • You have access to the .jad and .cod file links

Keep in mind, the easiest way to download an application or theme is directly through an OTA link using your BlackBerry Browser. For this tutorial I will be using the application XBerryLive.

Use these links to jump to a particular section of the guide:

WARNING: Do this at your own risk. I am not responsible for any problems that may occur as a result of following this guide. Like I always say…make plenty of backups!
