BGR put together an awesome review of the BlackBerry Bold 9700, initially covering its hardware in Part 1. The Bold 9700 in Part 1 is a pre-production unit but BG says he’s going to review an AT&T production unit in Part 2!

Here’s what BG goes over in this review:

  • Hardware / Design
  • Screen
  • OS
  • Keyboard
  • Phone
  • Browser
  • Speaker
  • Battery

The pictures alone are enough to make you drool  . Here’s a statement from the review showing that the Bold 9700 is definitely in BG’s good graces:

“So you’re saying the BlackBerry 9700 is the best BlackBerry ever?”

Yes. It’s the finest BlackBerry ever crafted and if you’re asking why it’s so much better than the Tour, it goes back to that CDMA vs. GSM argument as well as the fact that the 9700 is simply a year newer.

Head on over to BGR for all the details and more pictures of this rocking BlackBerry and let me know what you think in the comments below!

Whenever I am home I am always connected via Wi-Fi to my wireless router, but when I leave I usually forget to shut it off. A new application was just released called WiFi Disabler, an application that automatically disables Wi-Fi when you are out of range.

If you don’t turn off your BlackBerry’s Wi-Fi connection it will continue to seek out Wi-Fi networks in your area, resulting in some battery drainage. WiFi Disabler is a convenient application that allows you to not have to worry about turning your Wi-Fi on and off.

Features:

  • Setup a delay timer so that the WiFi radio has a chance to reconnect
  • Enable/Disable visible notification of WiFi been turned off
  • Conserves Battery Life

Wi-Fi Disabler is available for any Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry on OS 4.5 and higher.

You can grab a copy of WiFi Disabler for $1.49 in the store until July 15th, after that it goes up to $3.95. You can also find this application in the BB Rocks! Mobile App Store.

US Cellular launches free Battery Swap program

us cellular logo US Cellular launches free Battery Swap program

Now here is a service I think every network should provide. US Cellular is now offering free battery swaps through their new Battery Swap program where customers can go to any US Cellular store and “change out a dead or dying battery for a fully-charged one.”

“Our Battery Swap program is perfect for people who depend on their wireless devices as their lifelines, such as business people, parents, not to mention heavy users who drain their battery daily,” said Jay Ellison, executive vice president and COO of U.S. Cellular. “We’re offering this service to help our customers stay connected.”

US Cellular has made a step in the right direction towards customer satisfaction with this Battery Swap program and I hope all the other networks follow suit.

This is great for those with removable batteries, sucks unfortunate for those that don’t.

Increase Your BlackBerry’s Battery Life by Decreasing Unnecessary Usage

bbbattery Increase Your BlackBerrys Battery Life by Decreasing Unnecessary Usage

Looking for a way to increase your BlackBerry’s battery life? PC World has a nice informational post that can help you save battery life in a few different ways.

Here is what I do:

  • Set my BlackBerry to automatically turn off at night for a short amount of time.
  • Turn off the radio (antenna) when I’m in a dead zone (no reception).
  • Don’t let my battery get into the red (almost dead).
  • Delete old messages and phone call logs (more memory more battery usage…I think).
  • Set screen brightness to lowest setting.
  • Turn off TrackBall clicking.

Pretty basic, but it works.

It’s difficult enough to keep plain-vanilla cell phones charged for a busy day of just talking.

But these days, we also use our smartphones for e-mail, surfing the Web, editing documents, accessing corporate networks, text messaging, enjoying music and video, playing games, managing our personal information and much more — making it all the more catastrophic when our devices run out of juice.

The problem is that while smartphone capabilities have increased dramatically in recent years, batteries have not kept pace. “Phones do so much more now, but battery technology hasn’t advanced that much,” says Scott Riddle, digital sales supervisor at BearCom, a retailer of mobile equipment. Riddle regularly hears from customers about their struggles to keep smartphones charged. “Everybody has this problem,” he says.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to significantly increase the time between charges, although no one solution is a silver bullet. “It’s a lot of little things that help,” according to Riddle.

We asked Riddle and other experts for their best tricks to extend your smartphone’s battery life. Here’s what they told us.
Remember the Basics

First, some basics. You may already know these tips, but if you apply them diligently, they can help increase battery life.
