Loopt let me know that they have just released a major update for their BlackBerry client that adds a bunch of new features. Loopt mobile updates your location in real-time while it runs in the background so you can meet up with nearby friends, explore new places to grab food, and find local events wherever you are.

Here are some of the features:

  • Discover the best places and events, including those rated highly by your friends on Pulse
  • See where your friends are on maps – view their latest updates listed in real-time and comment on them
  • Check-in to instantly share your updates with friends – easily update Facebook and Twitter with your photos and places in one Loopt check-in
  • Browse and rate local places and events – peruse detailed information from Zagat, Citysearch, and the Loopt community
  • Save money through special offers from nearby retailers with local coupons

I’m not sure how this application will affect battery life since it constantly updates in the background so if you try it out be sure to let me know how it worked for you in the comments.

Loopt is currently available in the BlackBerry App World as a free download for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 (T-Mobile, AT&T), BlackBerry Tour 9630 (Sprint, Verizon) and BlackBerry Bold 9000 (AT&T). For more info about this update check out the press release after the jump.

Today buzzd unveiled its free BlackBerry application in the BlackBerry App World.

Buzzd gives BlackBerry users location-based guides making it easy to find a place to eat or grab some drinks, search for local events and more!

buzzd is the premier location-sensitive city guide and social network for your mobile phone. buzzd answers “what’s going on around me right now?™” by delivering up-to-the-minute info on bars, restaurants, concerts and events in a specific set location. buzzd features listings from Flavorpill, Time Out, Citysearch, ZAGAT, Upcoming as well as real-time posts (“buzzes”) from members of the buzzd community. Create a profile, add/invite friends and – if you post a “buzz” – it is sent as a text-message to your nearby friends in the network.

Buzzd also allows you to add events to your BlackBerry Calendar, send updates from buzzd to Twitter and it is fully integrated with your maps application for getting directions and locating a venue. You can also take pictures and post them for other buzzd members to see.

Up till now buzzd was available only through their mobile website. Buzzd does not require GPS because it uses Cell IDs to determine your location, the first application in the BlackBerry App World to do so.

Check out buzzd in the BlackBerry App World and let me know what you think!
