A few weeks ago I let you know that the WordPress team was planning to release an app refresh of their application for BlackBerry smartphones. Today they’ve launched a public beta of version 1.6 which is available for most devices running OS 4.5 or higher. Danilo from WordPress would like your help in testing the following:

• Are all of your blogs still in the app if you upgraded?
• Try to post a quick photo.
• If you have a WordPress.com blog in the app, try out the new Read function. Change filters, like some posts, view Freshly Pressed, and more.
• Try the new File Picker, is it fast? Responsive? (It now sort files by last-modification date.)
• The Posts/Pages/Comments lists now have infinite loading. Check to make sure it keeps loading your content.
• Is the new Dashboard rendered like it should? See example.

The Automattic team really snuck this one out! Last week I let you know they were planning to release version 1.6 of WordPress for BlackBerry as an app refresh but they didn’t mention anything about a version for the BlackBerry PlayBook. However, WordPress for PlayBook is now available as a free download in BlackBerry App World! Here’s the official description:

The all new WordPress for PlayBook™ app allows you to write posts, edit pages, and manage comments on the go. Both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress (2.9.2 or higher) sites are supported. Download the app and start blogging on the go in no time.

It’s been a long time since the WordPress team released an update for the WordPress for BlackBerry app. According to a new post at the WordPress for BlackBerry Dev Blog, version 1.6 is now in the works as an app “refresh” that will support OS 6 and 7. Here are other improvements they have planned for this release:

• Option/setting for # of comments to download
• Infinite scrolling on posts/pages/comments
• Add Images Alignment options
• Integrate the WordPress.com Reader
• Add the ability to make a post sticky

There’s no mention of when they plan to release WordPress for BlackBerry version 1.6 but check back here since we’ll post when it’s available, or go to blackberry.wordpress.org for more info.

Not sure how I missed this but a reader let me know the WordPress team updated their official BlackBerry app a few weeks ago to version 1.5. As a reminder, this app allows you to write posts, upload photos and videos, edit pages, and manage comments for WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress (2.9.2 or higher) blogs. Changes in version 1.5 include:

• Added support for Blavatars (“Blog Avatars”).
• Added preview for drafts, scheduled and private posts.
• Introduced the home screen icon for comment notifications.
• Added a visual indicator that shows the post status in the post list screen.
• Added support for Discussion settings (enable/disable comments, pingbacks and Trackbacks).
• Categories are now alphabetically sorted.
• Added the possibility to specify a resize dimension on each image.
• Changed the image resize feature, by adding predefined dimensions loaded from the Blog Media Settings.
• Fixed issues on the Permissions settings screen, it now appears once at first startup.
• Small UI redesign.

Yesterday I let you know that WordPress for BlackBerry was updated to version 1.4.6. Today WordPress pushed out a small update to version 1.4.6.1 and this time there’s a changelog. This version is a security update that also improves the communication layer within the app by using a completely different, strongly encrypted storage model. There are no new features in version 1.4.6.1 but here are the other changes:

• You can now select which type of the Media API that should be used for uploading photos and videos.
• Added the Preview for Private Posts/Pages
• Improved the preview screen, which is now using the BlackBerry browser or any browser installed on your device.
• Fix for VideoPress issue when uploading multiple videos #181.
• Fix for app permission issues that could freeze the app if all permissions are not set to Allow #179.
• Fix for postID that are bigger than the XML-RPC specification #180.
• Improved the communication layer.
• Improved the XML-RPC calls.
• Fix for post/page comments setting that allow people to post comments on new articles created using the app #163.
• Other minor changes.

A few weeks ago I let you know that WordPress release a beta version of their BlackBerry application, version 1.4.5.2 or beta 1.4.6. Yesterday WordPress officially pushed out version 1.4.6 for everyone. Here are the release notes:

• This release is a security update that also improves the communication layer within the app.
• While the app should transfer your credentials to the new storage model, you might be forced to re-add your blogs/sites when updating. (Draft posts will not be erased, so once you have re-added a blog the old drafts should become visible again.)

Even though this changelog is short the one for version 1.4.5.2 had a few more items so version 1.4.6 does include a few other fixes. For more info and to download WordPress for BlackBerry go to blackberry.wordpress.org or search for it in the BlackBerry App World.

I wanted to wait a bit to see if WordPress would post a changelog for the latest version of the BlackBerry app, but it looks like they’re not going to. A few days ago WordPress for BlackBerry was updated to version 1.4.5. I haven’t noticed any significant changes yet so if you update yours and spot something be sure to let us know in the comments. Chances are this update only included some bug fixes.
