Board and Management Changes at BlackBerry

Recently, BlackBerry announced some board and management changes. According to reports, these changes are a part of the reorganization that’s been happening at BB of late.

The current Chief Operating Officer Kristian Tear and Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben plan to exit the company. Chief Financial Officer Brian Bidulka will step aside to make way for James Yersh. Yersh has been with BlackBerry since 2008 and has been Senior Vice President, Controller and the Company Head of Compliance previously. Bidulka will continue as a special advisor for the CEO during the balance part of the fiscal year to assist the transition.

I think many people will be happy to hear about Frank Boulben’s exit and everyone is anxious to see how things pan out for a new CMO.

Press Release Excerpts

In an address, John Chen, CEO and Executive Chair of BlackBerry thanked Kristian Tear and Frank Boulben for their contributions. He said he looked forward to more direct work with BB’s talented engineering teams and worldwide sales and marketing teams for driving innovation and facilitation of BlackBerry’s turn-around.

He also went on to thank Brian Bidulka for the eight dedicated years of service that he had put in. Chen said he looked forward to work with James Yersh and the finance team as they moved forward, executed their plans and delivered long-term value for BB’s shareholders.

Chen added that BlackBerry’s cash position was strong and that BB, by a sizeable margin, continued to be a top provider of secure and trusted solutions for mobile device management to enterprises worldwide. He said that he would build on the core strengths. In conjunction with the management level changes, he would align his organizational structure and senior management team.

He planned to refine the company strategy and ensure that they delivered the best in terms of devices, device management and mobile security through BES 10, provided messaging solutions across platforms with BBM, and expanded the use of QNX embedded systems.

There was also an announcement about the resignation of Roger Martin who had been on the board since 2007. Board member and past Board Chairperson Barbara Stymiest said that the Board had greatly benefitted from Martin’s insights and expertise over a period of six years and that they wished the best for him.

James Yersh is an experienced professional with over 15 years of work in the telecommunications and technology industries. Prior to 2008 when he joined BlackBerry, he served at different senior positions at Deloitte and Cognos Incorporated.
