Things just keep getting better for the BlackBerry PlayBook! Apps and games for the PlayBook are still rolling into BlackBerry App World and now we have an awesome port courtesy of Trevor Nunes aka froggyface. Trevor was able to port FCEUX to the PlayBook as FCEUXpb, allowing users to play NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) games like Super Mario, Duck Hunt, Zelda and any other NES games on their tablet.

FCEUXpb the FCEUX port for Blackberry Playbook

FCEUX is a Nintendo Entertainment System and ‘Famicom’ emulator of the classic 8bit console of the 1980s. This project depends on SDL and TouchControlOverlay libraries found on the github.com/blackberry pages.

Besides for making FCEUXpb available for download, Trevor also put the source code for it up on GitHub so interested developers can help out. FCEUXpb is not available on BlackBerry App World yet so you’ll have to manually side-load it.

You can check out the GitHub page for FCEUXpb here. Installation instructions courtesy of OSBB:

  1. Setup developer mode on your Playbook and get your favorite sideloader ready (FCEUXpb isn’t available in App World yet). If you don’t know how to sideload, there’s some instructions for that in the CrackBerry Forums.
  2. Download FCEUX from http://www.mediafire.com/?i0m97qp8g03d94d (the source code is available on Github for anyone interested) and sideload it
  3. On your Playbook, create the directory /roms/nes in your /misc folder (see this post if you need instructions on doing that)
  4. Get some NES roms. Google is your friend for this. Please note that you cannot legally download any ROMs that you do not own a physical copy of; in fact, whether or not you can even download ROMs for games you legally own is questionable. In short, check your local laws, perhaps contact an attorney, and do not do anything illegal. Also note that the original Mario is not available in ROM format, but can be found as part of the Duck Hunt 2pack.
  5. (Optional) If you want to, you can remap the buttons by swiping down from the top bezel. The game you’re playing can be cycled by pressing the screen where that blue box is.
  6. Kick back and rock some awesome NES games!

Update: If FCEUXpb keeps force closing on you, try deleting it, rebooting, and reinstalling it over and over until it works. Sounds silly, but it worked for me.
