Earlier today I let you know that RIM officially announced the rollout of the BlackBerry 7.1 OS. In that announcement RIM also mentioned that a bunch of apps would receive an update, one of them being BlackBerry Messenger. BBM version 6.1.0.49 is now officially available for download and includes the following changes:

• Support for Animated Avatars - display pictures can now be animated!
• Enjoy a new selection of Emoticons
• Double the space to update your Personal Messages
• Customize the colour of chat bubbles for your contacts
• Simpler display picture update from the camera app – snap a picture and display it on BBM right away
