TOMTOM Still Working with Blackberry for Maps and Navigation |
Realistically, mobile navigation apps are hit and miss. Sometimes they really get the directions and location of a particular place spot on, while other times they can be way off. When it comes to Blackberry Maps, the platform has always been pretty good. Compared to Apple Maps, it hasn’t gotten anyone lost in the Australian Outback, so that’s a good sign (little jest there).
For Blackberry 10, the parent company partnered with TomTom to offer an excellent navigation experience for their mobile devices. Hopefully, you already know that TomTom develops many different kinds of navigation devices including standalone GPS units. It is because of that reason, I shouldn’t need to explain why Blackberry Maps is so good.
In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that Blackberry Maps is on par with Google Maps for Android. I’ve used both a countless number of times and I’ve had mishaps and successes with both in equal amounts. I’d be interested to know if other users have experience the same thing or not? Android users feel free to weigh in here.
Recently, Blackberry announced in a brief press release that they’ve renewed the agreement with TomTom for Blackberry Maps. That means the navigation platform will continue to make use of technology supplied by the GPS device giant. Obviously, this is great news for the company, the platform and Blackberry users alike!
The press release first showed up on Business Wire, and actually came directly from TomTom instead of Blackberry. It included the following text:
AMSTERDAM-(BUSINESS WIRE)-TomTom today announced an updated agreement with BlackBerry® to provide real-time traffic information for the maps app on BlackBerry® 10.
TomTom Traffic provides customers with more precise traffic information, enabling faster journeys, more accurate arrival times, and a smarter navigation experience.
BlackBerry 10 customers also have the option to anonymously help enhance the coverage and quality of TomTom’s world-class traffic information by sharing traffic data.
“Having accurate and up-to-date traffic information integrated in BlackBerry Maps is an important feature for customers, and TomTom is a recognized leader that provides traffic data to many companies in the market,” said Adrian Gould, VP of Handheld Software Product Management at BlackBerry. “We are pleased to expand our relationship with TomTom in support of BlackBerry 10 customers.”
“By integrating TomTom Traffic, BlackBerry’s smartphone customers will have access to the most accurate traffic information available,” said Charles Cautley, Managing Director of TomTom Automotive & Licensing. “We are proud to be supporting BlackBerry to deliver enhanced location-based services to its subscribers across the globe.”
Although both companies have publically announced the continuing partnership, there’s no word about how long it will remain active. This could very well last for just another year, five years, or even more than that.
Still, it’s hard to detract from the positive aspect of this news. Blackberry Maps will continue to be supported by TomTom, and that also means it will continue to offer accurate navigation and turn-by-turn GPS support to Blackberry 10 users.
How has your experience been with Blackberry Maps? Have you found the platform to be accurate? Have you encountered any situations where the directions or information was incorrect? Please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
