Blackberry App World is Now Just ‘Blackberry World’, and Here’s Why

By Briley (Google)

Blackberry App World is now called Blackberry World. This change also resulted in RIM’s annual event Blackberry World, being rebranded as Blackberry Live. It’s plainly apparent that there’s a lot of change going on at RIM’s headquarters, and that only makes sense. Blackberry 10 has been touted as a “game-changer” in the mobile world. Of course, everyone, including Blackberry People, have a lot of questions about the new platform that will only be answered in the coming days. Luckily, we don’t have too much longer to wait as there  are only two days left until the massive Blackberry 10 launch event.

Blackberry World is More Than Just an App Marketplace Now

Blackberry App World is Now Just Blackberry World, and Heres Why

RIM obviously had a reason for changing the name. Blackberry App World is now just Blackberry World because it’s going to offer more than just mobile apps. Much like Apple’s iTunes and Google’s Play store, Blackberry World will now include music, movies and TV shows right along with all the mobile apps.

That means, when Blackberry 10 arrives, Blackberry users will actually be able to go to the mobile market for all of their entertainment needs.

RIM took the time to send out a press release, highlighting these new changes to Blackberry World, and we’ve included the full text below. Before we get to it though, we’re going to consider just what this news means to the rest of us Blackberry folk.

RIM Promises a ‘Competitive Offering’ of Media Content for Blackberry 10

The first issue that comes to mind when we hear a promise of additional media content, especially concerning music, movies and TV shows, is the fixed amount. You can guarantee additional content until you’re blue in the face, but the truth is- if the content isn’t worth it, then it’s not a positive feature. Especially when it comes to digital content, no one want to see a marketplace that is lacking in innovative and engaging content. Sure, watching older movies or TV shows, and listening to older music is okay in certain circumstances, but people also fancy new content to go right along with it.

Essentially, what’ I’m getting at, is that I’d love to watch the latest digital video rentals right on my Blackberry Z10, or Blackberry Playbook. I won’t be able to do this if the Blackberry World catalog sucks.

Blackberry App World is Now Just Blackberry World, and Heres Why

According to RIM, there’s nothing to worry about.

“Music and video content is an integral part of a rich mobile experience. People want easy and convenient access to their favorite music, movies and TV shows wherever they are,” said Frank Boulben, Chief Marketing Officer at Research In Motion. “RIM is committed to working with content providers to bring the best, most up-to-date content to our customers with BlackBerry 10, and to make it easy for them to get what they want.”

Furthermore, Blackberry World will include TV and movie content from the following studios:

  • 20th Century Fox
  • Entertainment One (eOne)
  • Lionsgate
  • MGM
  • National Film Board of Canada
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (US)
  • Starz Digital Media
  • STUDIOCANAL
  • The Walt Disney Studios
  • Universal Pictures (UK)
  • Warner Bros.
  • ABC Studios
  • BBC Worldwide
  • CBC/Radio-Canada
  • CBS
  • DHX Media
  • ITV
  • National Geographic
  • NBCUniversal (UK)
  • Nelvana
  • Twentieth Century Fox Television
  • Univision Communications Inc.

In addition, Blackberry World will include DRM-free music content from the following studios and labels:

  • 4AD Records
  • Domino Recording Company
  • Finetunes
  • Matador Records
  • [PIAS] Entertainment Group
  • Rough Trade Records
  • Sony Music Entertainment
  • The Orchard
  • Universal Music Group
  • Warner Music Group
  • XL Recordings and Zebralution

Blackberry World Content Available at Launch

Most of the content listed will be available right at the initial launch of the platform. Unfortunately, the TV and movie content will only be available in the US, UK and Canada for the time being. Of course, later on, support will be expanded to include even more territories. This is pretty much a given, especially considering the Blackberry platform currently has the most potential within international territories.

The DRM-free music content, however, will be available in 18 different countries.

  • Canada
  • USA
  • UK
  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • Columbia
  • Mexico
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • South Africa
  • Spain
  • Australia
  • India
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore

I summarized everything that RIM said in the press release, however, just in case you’d like to see it all again in their words, I’ve included the press release below.
