The BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 has officially started rolling out. BlackBerry users in Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa have already started receiving the update. All devices running BlackBerry 10 will receive the OS update.

It has been nearly a year since BlackBerry launched a major update. If you own an older BlackBerry 10 device, the latest update will give you access to all new features baked into the OS.

The new update improves the BB 10 experience in numerous ways. BlackBerry 10.3.1 brings with it a new look and feel. There are plenty of powerful features such as BlackBerry Assistant and BlackBerry Blend. There are also lots of entertainment and productivity apps. This version comes with two app stores. Users can download apps from BlackBerry’s own app store and Amazon Appstore.

BlackBerry has updated icons. Also, now there is an action bar in the middle of the screen that allows users to quickly access their most commonly used functions.

The update provides access to several powerful features such as:

BlackBerry Blend

With BlackBerry Blend you can access the content and messaging on your BlackBerry device from your tablet or computer. So, if you are working on your computer and you receive notifications on your BlackBerry, you don’t have to pick up the phone to read and reply to them. You will receive the notifications on your computer. Blend works across Windows, Mac, Android and iOS.

More apps

By bringing out this update, BlackBerry has also addressed a major issue plaguing its phones – the shortage of apps. BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 comes with dual appstores – BlackBerry World and Amazon Appstore. If you are looking for productivity apps, you can download them from BlackBerry World. If, on the other hand, you are looking for entertainment apps, you can find lots of them in Amazon Appstore.

BlackBerry Assistant

The version 10.3.1 comes with BlackBerry Assistant. The Assistant can take both text and voice commands and help users to manage their contacts, email, calendar and other applications. In fact, BlackBerry Assistant is the only mobile phone assistant that can manage both work and personal content. Depending upon the nature of your command, it responds intelligently. So, if you give a voice command, it will speak back. A text command will receive a silent response.

BlackBerry Hub

BlackBerry Hub allows you to access all of your conversations in one place. The Instant Actions feature makes it easy to organize your inbox.

BB OS 10.3 Keyboard shortcuts

Shortcuts save time and BlackBerry has incorporated several of them into the latest version of its OS. Shortcuts work on all BlackBerry 10 devices with a physical keyboard. Almost all letters in the keyboard have specific shortcuts assigned to them. By simply using these shortcuts, you can activate most of your used apps.

More battery life

BlackBerry 10.3.1 is designed to optimize your battery life. By customizing the Power Saving profile of your device you can improve battery life by up to 15%.

Improved Camera Functions

The camera software too has been upgraded. It now automatically selects modes and settings when it detects sharp contrast. You no longer have to switch between video recorder and camera. Better still, you can take pictures and shoot videos at the same time.
