Well folks, the day is here, and Google Sync is no more. Google announced via their blog back in April that they would be discontinuing support for the Google Sync for Blackberry App. Support for the app actually ended in June of this year, and Google stopped pushing updates to Blackberry devices for the app and service.
“Beginning June 1, 2012, we’re ending our support for Google Sync for BlackBerry. If you already have the app installed, you’ll still be able to use it; however, it will not be available for download after June 1. If you currently use Google Sync for BlackBerry, we encourage you to switch to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) or the Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server going forward. These alternatives offer a better overall experience as you can sync your email messages, calendar and contacts through a single service.”
Google Sync Stopped Connecting to The Servers Yesterday
They later promised that the app would continue working (synchronizing with Google servers) until September 1st, 2012. The service didn’t actually shut down until yesterday, that’s more than three months later than the projected date. So, it looks like Google left the service running so that folks could get their last few connections in as a final Huzzah!
“The app download link will be removed on June 1. Users may continue to use the app if installed, however it will not be supported by Google, and it will stop working on September 1, 2012.”
The app currently hangs when you try to synchronize data and just reports an error message that directs you to sign out and sign back in. No matter how many times you try to sign out and back in though, the app still delivers the error code.
Rest in Peace Google Sync
Rest in peace Google sync, you were immensely handy while you lasted. This isn’t the first Google service to retire on Blackberry handsets. Google stopped all support for their Mail app late in 2011.
In the meantime, Blackberry Internet Service will sufficiently sync your Google data, at least until Blackberry 10 arrives. As for what Google has to say about it:
“You should switch to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), which is part of the standard BlackBerry service plan to sync Gmail, Google Calendar, and Contacts with their BlackBerry. BIS is provided by RIM and mobile carriers. BlackBerry offers this guidance on syncing Calendar and Contacts, in addition to your Gmail. Please contact RIM or your carrier for more information and support.”
Blackberry 10 Will Allow You to Synch Multiple Gmail Calendars
Luckily, Blackberry 10 will not only allow you to sync Google data, including Calendars, but it will also allow you to sync more than one. This is convenient for all the busy business people out there who use more than one Calendar to schedule tasks.
January 31st is getting closer and closer, and as of today (December 14th, 2012) there are 46 days left until Blackberry 10 officially launches. Does anyone else notice the excitement in the air?
RIM continues to truck on, despite numerous analysts predicting the end of the company.
