Do you frequent torrents? Are you constantly using a torrent downloader on your PC like BitTorrent or uTorrent? Would you like to be able to monitor your torrents and start downloads remotely from your Blackberry?
Unfortunately, the BitTorrent app that was promised some time ago for Blackberry never made it into Blackberry World. I’m not entirely sure why that happened. It could be that the developers just stopped working on the app, or Blackberry restricted it from being made available in the store (less likely). At this point, I guess we’ll never know. That’s nothing to fret about, however because there is a pretty great alternative that’s been available for some time now. It has seen many improvements and software updates, which have taken it far over the past few months.
Torrent Time is a remote management app for Blackberry 10 which allows you to interact with an existing uTorrent install. You cannot download torrents and related files directly onto your Blackberry with it, so don’t expect the app to allow you to do so. Instead, you can start and stop downloads for your connected uTorrent account, while you’re on-the-go. It works great with standard torrent files, but has even been improved to include support for the more common magnet links, which have become increasingly more popular lately.
This is definitely exciting, because I’m willing to bet you’ve browsed torrent databases with your Blackberry once or twice just to see what was available. Even though you cannot download the related content onto your device it’s still a pretty powerful app.
Of course, you can always use a mobile browser to connect to uTorrent remotely, but that’s not as convenient as using an app made specifically for the Blackberry platform. Native torrents keep all the aesthetics you know so well, and couple that with responsive connectivity. Personally, I would choose a native app every time if I had the option between that and a web portal.
According to the Blackberry World description, here are some of the more prominent features of the app:
- Uses uTorrent Remote feature, just put in the same username and password that you use for remote.utorrent.com
- ActiveFrame giving you a quick and easy update of what your uTorrent is up to.
- Built in WebView allows you to go to your favorite sites and easily add new torrents to uTorrent’s queue
- Pause, Start, Stop, and Delete torrents in uTorrent’s queue
- View file list for a torrent and see the download status of each
- Set file download priority
- Notifications of completed downloads (You may disable these through the app settings)
The app isn’t free, and will set you back $2.99 if you decide to give it a try. In my opinion though, it’s well worth the price if you torrent a lot and would like to manage your downloads remotely with your Blackberry. I haven’t found a better app in Blackberry World with the same selection of features.
Is there another app that you use to manage torrents remotely with your Blackberry 10 handset? Please share in the comments below, if so. Feel free to discuss what you think about Torrent Time, as well.
