Believe it or not, you don’t actually have to own a motorcycle to enjoy a nice ride. There are plenty of video games which will offer the same pleasure. Of course, you won’t get to feel the wind blowing through your hair or that incredible sense of freedom which stems from being on the open road, but that’s beside the point.
Cue Biker Boy HD for Blackberry 10. It’s a remarkable action game for BB10 devices that borrows a lot of elements from Trials HD. If you’ve never played the aforementioned Trials before, you basically race a dirt bike or motorcycle through a 2D course, dodging obstacles, pulling off stunts and more. The main goal is to reach the end of the track as quickly as possible.
Biker Boy HD is essentially the same thing, except there are a couple really neat twists to the game which make it quite a bit different from Trials. Probably the biggest twist is that the game features both 2D and 3D levels. Of course, either way you’re traveling from one side of the screen to the other in true platform style, but the 3D levels are fully animated. The 2D levels have more of a shadow-like appearance and see you navigating Biker Boy through a wild course. In the 3D levels, you’re racing through a dirt course with a lot less obstacles. In fact, most of what you do in the 3D courses is jump over sand mounds.
The biggest setback with Biker Boy HD is that the controls can be a bit small. Just the way they are positioned can lead to danger in certain situations. One could say it takes a bit of strategy to even control your character on screen, but that’s a slight jest there. That being said, there are five different controls: gas, brake, jump, and tilt. Of course, there are two different tilt controls one for right and the other for left which makes up the five total buttons. The gas and brake buttons are displayed on the bottom left hand side of the screen. On the bottom right hand side of the screen, the two tilt buttons are displayed on the very bottom and a jump button is positioned above them.
When playing the 3D levels, the variety is pretty great. The background environment and visuals change depending on the level, and the obstacles change position or layout. As you make jumps, and dodge obstacles you’ll also need to perform tricks by doing air flips and more. When you reach the end of a level your score is tallied up, and clearly the point is to get as many points as possible. The stunts are pretty tricky to pull off at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s smooth sailing, at least until the later levels.
The game is only available on the Z10 and Z30, but that’s alright because it would be quite difficult to play on the smaller screen devices anyway.
Biker Boy HD also includes the following features:
